A Question to Ponder

Why are the vowel-sounds in "flood" and "food" pronounced differently?

Perhaps a word historian can answer that for me. Is it because they have different etymologies?

"Flood" rhymes with "Thud", “Mud”, “Crud” and “Dud”, which are all words that I associate with a “Flood”.

“Dud” would, of course, be in reference to non-“bud” who was in charge of both of the “Floods”.

…oh, go chew your “Cud”.

I think it's just because English likes being difficult.

English makes so little sense to me sometimes.
